Silicon tombac: high pressure die-cast alloy with stainless steel properties
Technical Information: Die-cast silicon tombac has a tensile strength of 500 up to 700* MPa with a breaking elongation of minimum 8%. Mechanism of action for the strength is the strain of the microstructure by silicon during rapid solidification in the die-casting process.
In the prototype process we do not cast in metallic molds, but into hot ceramic. In order to be able to adjust similar mechanical properties despite the slow solidification in the prototype process, the prototype alloy rapid Sitomb was developed. This innovative prototype alloy achieves approx. 70-80% of the strength and hardness and> 100% of the elongation of the die-cast silicon tombac.
For the prototype process, the present 3D model is used for the dimensional evaluation. With reference to this 3D model, usually tolerances according to ISO 2768-f can be ensured. For very thin-walled or voluminous parts, an expansion to ISO 2768-m or -c may be necessary.
In series production (high pressure die casting), the dimensions can then be set very precisely according to the technical drawing. An initial sample test report based on the technical drawing of the component is only created for series production using the high pressure die casting process – not in the prototype status.
